18 April 2023

The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction announces that Frederick Studemann, Literary Editor of Financial Times, will chair the judging panel for the 2023 award.

The announcement coincides with the opening of submissions for this year’s prize. Publishers will have until June 17 to enter up to three non-fiction books per imprint with publication dates between 1 November 2022 and 31 October 2023.

The prize aims to recognise and reward the best of non-fiction and is open to authors of any nationality. It covers all non-fiction in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts.

Frederick Studemann will join a panel of judges to determine the winner of the 2023 prize, announced 16 November 2023, following the shortlist announcement in October and longlist in September.

The 2023 awards event, taking place at the Science Museum, London is generously supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation.

Frederick Studemann is Literary Editor of the Financial Times. He joined the FT in 1996 as Berlin correspondent since when he has held a number of roles across the paper, including Assistant News Editor, UK Correspondent, European News Editor, Comment & Analysis Editor and Assistant Editor. He was a founding member of FT Deutschland where he ran the features and weekend section. The son of restless, itinerant parents, he spent his early years in Cork and Dublin, before moving to London, with later postings in Berlin, the Soviet Union, Greece and Austria.

He is currently on the judging panel for The International Book Prize 2023, which he will have completed by the time judging for The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2023 begins.
